The next few posts are based on the book of Jonah: Jonah, Chapter 1 vs. 1-3, 13-17; Chapter 2 vs. 1 & 2
Jonah got the call to go to Nineveh. God tells Jonah that he wants him to go to Nineveh to let them know that he has seen their wickedness and that they will be destroyed. Nineveh was a great city, and yet a heathen city, without the knowledge and worship of God. Modern day Nineveh is a city of 100,000 people in Iraq. The Assyrians were ruthless, cruel and wicked.
What?! Just where can you run from God? David writes in Psalm 139:7-8: “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths (Sheol), you are there. “
You aren’t fooling anybody. God knows where you are. He knows what you’re up to. You don’t have to tell that church lady where you been—because God already knows. You don’t need update your status on Twitter or Facebook to tell “what are you up to?” or “what is happening?” because God already knows. In fact, in this day of sharing with social media—EVERYBODY knows what you are doing!
We know that we’ve got some mission work to do; we know that we need to be more active than we are in the life of the church and the work of the ministry; but we think that if we get BUSY doing other stuff, maybe God will bypass us.
Then again perhaps we do know and we in effect tell God, “NO”. My beloved little girl is 2 years old. While she’s cute and everything, she still likes to tell you “NO.” She thinks that her “NO” is carrying some weight, and will some how affect the outcome. But just like her word doesn’t carry much weight with anybody, neither does our refusal to do what God has commanded us to do.
